I qualified as a medical practitioner in 1978 having studied at King's College Hospital School of Medicine, University of London. During my training I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry (1975). I began my specialisation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1980 and passed the membership examination of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist in London in 1986. In the same year, I submitted and passed my MD thesis to the University of London. I was made Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1998.
I was appointed Consultant/Honorary Senior Lecturer in the University Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Royal Free Hospital in June 1990 and have worked there ever since. Prior to that I worked as Clinical Lecturer in the Nuffield Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Oxford. I was also appointed Consultant Gynaecologist to the King Edward VII Hospital Sister Agnes in London in 1991.
I have almost 30 years experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, including 19 as a Consultant. My special interests are in the area of minimal access surgery (endoscopic surgery), including laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery, and vaginal surgery as related to the field of gynaecology. I have researched and written numerous scientific articles on various aspects of the topic, and have made presentations at national and international scientific meetings. Since 1989, I have also been involved in the organisation of regular postgraduate workshops and other courses on minimal access surgery, including laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, and vaginal surgery.
I have published more than 170 scientific articles in peer reviewed journals and more than 50 chapters in books and proceedings, including a chapter on "Hysteroscopy and Laparoscopy" in a major postgraduate textbook of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Dewhurst's Textbook of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 7th Edition, 2007). I have made over 380 presentations and national and international scientific meetings.
